" Through practical action, you can turn theory into reality.”
The phrase that is at the top of our homepage is one I often write in my articles, which was a reflection I encountered while reading "History and Class Consciousness: Studies in Marxist Dialectics" by Georg Lukács.
In essence, between the dialectic of social theory and social reality, there exists a crucial intermediary: action. Without this intermediary, the dialectic cannot continue to work.
In recent years, I have learned much from my partners regarding traffic issues. Despite the modern, progressive ideas and numerous international studies, a significant gap persists between these theoretical advancements and the reality of Taiwan’s traffic environment and decision-making systems. This disconnect has resulted in persistently high rates of traffic-related casualties, a situation that is both tragic and frustrating.
Thus, a group of us resolved to take action. We chose to respond to the issues we observed, endeavoring to address various critical aspects of the current traffic crisis. Some of us engaged in dialogue with government officials, while others produced videos to promote progressive ideas, organized educational workshops, or took to the streets in protest or lobbied lawmakers.
Through these efforts, we have successfully advanced legislative amendments, made improvements to specific road infrastructures, and facilitated the implementation of key transportation policies.
This progress would not have been possible without the continued effort of this group. These individuals did not merely continue their studies or engage in reflection; they consistently rose to action. They actively worked for reform, conducted road engineering reviews, organized public education, and traveled across the country to advocate for both the people and the government. Their dedication is deeply moving. Although our failures are far more than our successes, we have nonetheless transformed into tangible reality.
It is the reason that I have placed this phrase at the top of our website: to encourage every advocate of traffic reform. Regardless of the differences or fights in us, always maintain our passion and take action.
I am grateful for the trust placed in me by our board members, and for the efforts of all our partners. This is a traffic war—one that spans decades, perhaps even centuries. However, if we continue to take action, we will ultimately transform the world.
